The University of Miami Athletic Training Room

The Miami training room is equipped with the latest in diagnostic and rehabilitative equipment. Computerized testing and a wide range of aerobic conditioning equipment are also available to help design individual rehabilitation programs and help reduce the risk of re-injury. The training room also utilizes Biodex machines to further aid athletes in their rehabilitation.

The University has teamed up with the country's finest physicians to assist in the care of UM athletes. The entire medical staff is on 24-hour call should the need arise for urgent treatment.

Miami also offers a comprehensive program intended to aid and educate student-athletes concerning the problems and dangers associated with the usage of drugs and substance abuse. The program consists of drug education, testing, counseling and rehabilitation.

Nationally respected and renowned in the Miami-Dade medical community, UM's certified trainers serve as the gatekeepers for the health care of Miami's student-athletes. They perform injury rehabilitation, evaluate injuries, perform therapy, use ultrasound, and manage and care for wounds.

The University of Miami also has created a major field of study for athletic training. All student trainers at UM are required to participate in the major under the direction of program director Scott McGonagle.

Current UM trainers have a wealth of knowledge in athletic training and have a combined 40 years of experience between them.

The Hurricane training room is easily accessible to all student-athletes and is centrally located in the Hecht Athletic Center.

Hurricane student-athletes receive the very best in state-of-the-art professional medical care. Head Athletic Trainer Scott McGonagle and veteran trainers Associate Head Trainer Kevin Blaske, Garrick Edwards, Corey Bennett and Jennifer Lilster work hand-in-hand with a full staff of internists, surgeons, dentists, optometrists and counselors to monitor and provide the best in health care to each student-athlete on a year-round basis.

Scott McGonagle
Head Athletic Trainer

Scott McGonagle Head Athletic Trainer Scott McGonagle is in his 13th season as head athletic trainer at the University of Miami. McGonagle and his staff are responsible for the year-round health care of every UM student-athlete. In his 28th year as an athletic trainer, McGonagle oversees the sports medicine program for Miami's 17 intercollegiate varsity sports. A native of Syracuse, Kan., McGonagle became a part of the Miami Hurricanes staff in 1995 as head athletic trainer. He oversees a staff of five full-time assistant trainers, seven graduate assistant trainers and works in conjunction with one of the nation's most respected staffs of physicians to assure the finest medical care for UM student-athletes. McGonagle's extensive experience includes thirteen seasons as head athletic trainer at the University of Tulsa from 1982 to 1995 and head athletic trainer in 1981-82 at Crowley (Texas) High School. McGonagle began his collegiate athletics career as a student trainer at the University of Kansas from 1977-1980. During that time, McGonagle worked as a student athletic trainer for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1978, 1979 and 1981 seasons. He attended the University of Kansas and received his bachelor of science in Physical Education in 1980. He later graduated from the University of Arizona in 1981 with his master's of science in Athletic Training.

Education: B.S. in Biology from Missouri Southern State College M.S. in Sports Management from the University of Tulsa.
Works with: Miami Football, baseball, and Women's Crew
Specializations: Shoulder and Elbow injury evaluation and rehabilitation
Special Interests/Achievements: worked in minor league baseball for 5 years and worked with the Continental Basketball Association for 2 years.
