EAST LANSING, Mich. - The University of Miami's Varsity Eight crew won its first race of the spring and the Varsity Four crew won its second consecutive race as the UM rowing team came away victorious in two of three events against Indiana Saturday morning at Grand River Park.

The 1st Varsity Eight crew of Monika Sajincic, Bethany Krawec, Sarah Medland, Louise Parry, Laura Cordner, Emily Wingrove, bow Tara Eddings, stroke Kelly Amsler and coxswain Shira Kharrazi finished in a time of 7:46.6, edging out the Hoosier's time of 7:47.2.

UM's Varsity Four crew of Molly Thornton, Karalyn Van Aken, bow Courtney Guy, stroke Julianne Parker and coxswain Ana Cristina Mantilla continued its strong start this spring, beating IU's Varsity Four convincingly, 9:04.6-to-9:25.3.

"I am really pleased with the way our team raced today," head coach Robbie Tenenbaum said. "The Varsity Eight had a great race, pulling through in the last couple hundred meters for a nice come-from-behind victory over Indiana."

The Hurricanes fell short in all three races against 14th-ranked Notre Dame Saturday afternoon. The Irish won the Varsity Four race, 9:09.8-to-9:31.1, and the 2nd Varsity Eight race, 7:52.7-to-8.27.8, before taking the Varsity Eight race, 7:43.2-to-8:06.1.

The teams raced against the current and battled a strong headwind throughout the day, forcing slower times across the board.

The `Canes will now make the short trip to Ypsilanti to face Eastern Michigan Sunday morning. Sunday's schedule against EMU has the Varsity Eight race slated for 9:15 a.m. and the 2nd Varsity Eight race at 9:30 a.m. before the Varsity Four's finish up the weekend with a 9:45 a.m. start time.
