CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of Miami swimming and diving team defeated Villanova, 151.5-85.5, Tuesday afternoon at UM's Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.

Freshman Annika Saarnak continues to perform well early in her UM career, placing first in both the 50-yard freestyle event (24.09) and the 100-yard freestyle event (52.19).

Junior Britta Boesing also had a solid afternoon for UM, finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:53.56 as well as the 100-yard backstroke event with a time of 58.52. Fellow junior Katie Eason continued the trend of Hurricanes winning two events with first places finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.41) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.79).

"I'm really impressed with how the girls are swimming," head coach Christie Shefchunas said. "This meet has given us a lot of confidence heading into our meet with FSU on Friday."

Boesing, Magda Waszkiewicz, Eason and Kirsten Pomerleau won the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:52.65 while the team of Saarnak, Pomerleau, Lizzi Torres and Ryann Labreche took home the 400-yard freestyle relay with a mark of 3:34.10.

Individually, Labreche won the 1000-yard freestyle event with a time of 10:24.12.

For the third time in as many events, Brittany Viola swept the diving events, winning the one-meter event with a score of 272.55 and the three-meter competition with a score of 288.83.

Villanova's Astrid Armgarth edged out Labreche to win the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:04.40, while fellow Wildcat Brie Vonrosendahl swam a 1:05.87 to claim first in the 100-yard breaststroke event.
