At Miami
Alex Blanco made the transformation into an effective relief pitcher in the middle of last season...finished the season with a 4.42 ERA in 18.1 innings of work...prior to making the move, Blanco hit .276 with seven starts at shortstop...after redshirting his first year at Miami in 2001, Blanco was used primarily as a reserve middle infielder...appeared in 14 contests in 2002 with two starts...Blanco made his collegiate debut with a plate appearance in game against Minnesota on Feb. 15...he played this past summer with the Staunton Braves where he was 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA in 12.1 innings over nine appearances in 2003...Blanco has been a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll the past three years.

On the mound, Blanco made 14 appearances for Miami out of the bullpen as a right-handed reliever...had a 4.42 ERA in 18.1 innings of work...he has struck out 15 and walked 15...pitched 2.1 innings in his first-ever appearance on the mound for UM, giving up two hits and no runs against South Florida on March 12...pitched one inning versus Rutgers on March 14, allowing one hit with two Ks...went 0.2 innings against Rutgers on March 16th, allowing his first run...pitched scoreless, hitless innings against Pace on May 2nd and May 4th...pitched two scoreless innings on May 9th at Jacksonville, allowing one hit and striking out two...worked 1.2 innings against Savannah State on May 16th, allowing one run on two hits, walking three and striking out two...pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings at fourth-ranked Long Beach State on May 24th. Blanco started seven games for the Hurricanes at shortstop...played in 18 games with a .276 batting average...he went 1-for-3 against Georgia Tech with two RBIs...turned in a career performance at the plate against Harvard with four hits an RBI and three runs scored ... collected two singles, a double and a triple...the triple was the first of his career...started at designated hitter on April 18th and 19th against Florida State...doubles as a right-handed relief pitcher out of the bullpen. 2003 NCAA Coral Gables Regional: Worked two-thirds of an inning against Bethune-Cookman on May 30, allowing only one hit in a 10-5 Miami victory...pitched one-third of an inning in a 13-10 victory over Florida in the Championship Game of the Coral Gables Regional on June 1st...allowed four runs (all earned) on three hits, walked one and struck out one against the Gators. 2003 NCAA Coral Gables Super Regional: Pitched 2.2 inning of scoreless, hitless relief, as the Hurricanes came back for a dramatic 10-9 win in game one of the super regional against North Carolina State. He came in to relieve J.D. Cockroft, getting the final two outs of the sixth inning. 2003 College World Series: Pitched 1.2 innings in UM's opening game of the CWS against Texas, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts...managed to get out of a bases-loaded jam with one out by striking out two Longhorns...pitched one inning in Miami's second meeting with the Longhorns in the College World Series, allowing two runs on two hits.

Batted .278 (5-for-18) on the season with three runs scored and one RBI...saw his final action of the 2002 season in game No. 1 vs. New York Tech (5/24) going 1-for-2 at the plate...appeared in all three Bethune-Cookman games with one plate appearance in game No. 1...walked and scored a run in game No. 3 vs. B-CC...tarted game Nos. 1 and 2 of the Florida State series at Coral Gables...went 2-for-4 in his first-ever start in game No. 1 versus FSU with one run scored and one RBI...went 1-for-2 with a run scored in game No. 2 against Elon...went 1-for-1 in game No. 2 against UCLA...was not on the postseason roster.
