Walter Diaz was named the Hurricanes' Rookie of the Year following a freshman campaign in which he hit .303 with five home runs and 21 RBI in 56 starts at second base and shortstop ... named to the 2005 Coral Gables All-Regional Team at shortstop ... did well in fall practice and is considered the fastest Hurricane on the basepaths ... will be relied upon heavily by the coaching staff and is expected to start at shortstop ... is capable of playing second base as well ... had a productive high school career at Braddock and Christopher Columbus High Schools in Miami ... a slick-fielding middle infielder with productive bat and good speed ... Led all Hurricane freshmen in games played, starts and nearly every offensive category ... seventh on the team with a .303 average, scored 50 runs, recorded eight doubles, a triple and five home runs with 21 RBIs and a .386 on-base percentage ... posted the Hurricanes' third-longest hitting streak of the season, hitting safely in 12 games from March 5-20 ... tied with Paco Figueroa for the team lead with three four-hit games (vs. George Washington, 2/27; vs. Oral Roberts, 4/1 and at Virginia Tech, 4/8). Lincoln Super Regional (6/10-11): Started both games at shortstop and went 0-for-7. Coral Gables Regional (6/3-5): Went 4-for-13 in the Regional... was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base in the Regional Championship against Mississippi State. ACC Tournament (5/25-26): Went 1-for-3 against N.C. State and Clemson, starting both games at shortstop. At Clemson (5/19-21): Started the series at second base and then switched with Roger Tomas to play shortstop in the middle of the first game and remained there the rest of the series ... went 2-for-12 with a double and two runs scored in the series. At Virginia (5/13-15): Was 2-for-10 with two walks and a run scored in the series. Vs. Jacksonville (5/6-8): Sat out the first game of the series and started the last two at second base ... went hitless in nine at-bats in the series with one walk. Vs. Maryland (4/29-5/1): Missed the first game of the series with illness ... returned in the second game to go 1-for-4 with three RBIs, two of which came on a home run in the sixth inning ... was 2-for-6 in the series with two runs scored. Vs. Florida State (4/22-24): Went 0-for-3 in the series opener with a run scored ... scored the game-winning run in the fourth inning of a 5-2 win in the second game of the series ... went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the series finale. At North Carolina (4/15-17): Scored six runs and went 5-for-12 with an RBI and a stolen base ... scored three runs in the series opener. High Point (2/4-6): Made his first collegiate start in the series opener, drawing a walk in the leadoff spot in his first plate appearance and eventually scoring ... went 0-for-3 in his first game, scoring two runs ... recorded the first hit of his career in the series finale, an RBI single to right field in the fifth inning ... singled three innings later to finish the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Braddock
Capped his high school career at Braddock High school by being named first-team All-State for head coach Lou Sanchez ... also named team MVP, first-team All-Dade County ... played first three seasons at Christopher Columbus High School and won the 2003 State Championship with the Explorers. Senior (2004): Batted .420 with five home runs and 30 RBI ... stole 15 bases ... also pitched for Braddock, earning five saves. Junior (2003): Helped Columbus to the 6A State Championship with a .360 batting average, six home runs and 25 RBI ... stole 15 bases ... earned six saves out of the bullpen. Sophomore (2002): Hit .320 with three home runs and 20 RBI, while swiping 10 bases ... saved three games for Columbus out of the bullpen. Freshman (2001): Batted .360 with 10 stolen bases and 20 RBI.
