Box Score

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The overpowering pitching of Cesar Carrillo and a solid night at the plate by the Hurricane hitters propelled Miami (25-9, 9-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) to a 7-3 win against Virginia Tech (11-12, 2-10 ACC) at English Field Friday night.

It was business as usual for Carrillo, who struck out six on just 58 pitches in a six-inning scoreless outing to improve his record to 8-0 this season and 20-0 for his career. He has not given up a run in his last 20.1 innings pitched and he lowered his season ERA to 0.86 with his performance Friday night. Virginia Tech's Greg Fryman pitched four and two-thirds innings and gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits in the loss to drop his season record to 1-1.

Walter Diaz led a 16-hit night for Miami at the plate, going 4-5 with a double, home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Brendan Katin went 3-4 and Paco Figueroa, Ryan Braun, Jon Jay and Danny Valencia each had two hits to lead the Hurricanes.

Vince Bongiovanni gave up one hit in two innings of relief for Miami.

The Hurricanes loaded the bases in the first on a walk by Paco Figueroa and singles by Ryan Braun. Senior Brendan Katin ripped a ground ball that ricocheted off Fryman and produced an infield single that scored Figueroa for the 1-0 lead.

UM loaded the bases again in the third on a Figueroa walk and singles by Braun and Jay. Valencia hit a two-run single to score Figueroa and Braun. Katin grounded into a double play, but was able to drive in Jay from third. Diaz stepped to the plate with the bases empty and put a 2-1 pitch from Fryman over the right field wall for his fourth home run of the season and a 5-0 Hurricanes lead at the end of three innings.

Miami added two runs in the fifth on RBI doubles by Diaz and Roger Tomas.

The Hokies made it interesting in the ninth, picking up a run on a single and two runs on a fielding error for the final 7-3 score.

Miami and Virginia Tech resume their series Saturday at Salem's Memorial Park. The first pitch is set for noon.

Notes: Danny Figueroa was ejected in the second inning... Valencia's two RBIs in the third inning gave him 36 for the season, tying the mark he set as a freshman at UNC-Greensboro last year... Miami is now 29-0 all-time when Carrillo pitches.
