CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Freshman lefthander Chris Hernandez tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts in a career-long eight innings of work as No. 1 Miami recorded its first league shutout since 2006 with a 1-0 victory over No. 16 Virginia (32-13, 13-9 ACC) Friday night at Mark Light Field. Junior Blake Tekotte's two-out single to right in the sixth scored freshman Joey Terdoslavich for the lone run of the ball game, giving Miami (34-5, 18-2 ACC) its 10^th straight Friday night win to open the season.

Hernandez (7-0) struck out six of the first seven UVa batters to open the game. He allowed just two hits and walked only one, facing just 26 batters on the night before giving way to Carlos Gutierrez in the ninth inning. Gutierrez recorded his 10^th save of the season, allowing one hit while striking out one in the ninth to secure the shutout.

Virginia starter Pat McAnaney (4-2) put in a strong performance in a losing effort, allowing just the one run on six hits while walking one and striking out six in eight innings.

Tekotte and Terdolsavich each went 2-for-3. Greg Miclat, David Adams and John Barr each had one hit for the Cavaliers.

Terdoslavich led off the bottom of the sixth with a double down the left field line. After McAnaney recorded back-to-back strikeouts, Tekotte singled to right bringing home Terdoslavich for the game winner.

The Hurricanes loaded the bases in the bottom half of the eighth but a double-play groundout ended UM's threat to add to its lead.

Game two of the three game set is slated for 7 p.m and will be televised live by CSS Saturday. Sophomore lefty Eric Erickson (6-0, 3.28 ERA) will face UVa RHP Jacob Thompson (5-2, 2.98 ERA).

Game Notes

-UM starter Chris Hernandez struck out six of the first seven batters he faced.

-Hernandez tossed a career-high eight innings and tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts.

-The shutout was Miami's first in Atlantic Coast Conference play since beating Duke, 3-0, March 17, 2006 in Durham.

-Miami held Virginia to just three hits on the night, the second-lowest hit total allowed by the Hurricanes this season. Wake Forest had just two hits against the Hurricanes in UM's 23-2 win on March 23.

-Miami won for the 10^th straight Friday to open the season.
