HURRICANES SET TO OPEN ACC PLAY AGAINST BOSTON COLLEGE           

Miami (6-1, 0-0 ACC) opens up Atlantic Coast Conference play when the Hurricanes host the Boston College Eagles (6-4, 0-0) at Mark Light Field. Game times are 7 p.m., 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All the games will be carried on the radio by the Student Voice of UM, WVUM (90.5 FM), which can also be picked up online at www.wvum.org. WQAM 560 AM will carry the games on Saturday and Sunday. Spanish radio WWWK 105.FM or WPIK 102.5 FM will carry the game Saturday night. Fans can also watch all three games on ACC Select at www.acc.playonsports.tv.

 

ABOUT THE MIAMI HURRICANES

Miami (6-1, 0-0 ACC) is coming off a midweek win over Lehigh, 9-2, Tuesday night. The Hurricanes had a season-high 14 hits in the win as five different Hurricanes had at least two hits. Early on, UM is hitting .296, but the story has been the `Canes pitching. Opponents are hitting just .166 against UM pitchers, while the staff has struck out 79 in 63 innings and walked just 19 while posting a 2.86 team ERA. Offensively Preseason All-Americans Blake Tekotte (.435, 10 Runs, 10 Hits, 1 HR, 3 RBI), Jemile Weeks (.345, 7 Runs, 10 Hits, 3 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI) Yonder Alonso (.333, 3 Runs, 8 Hits, 2 2B, 6 RBI) anchor the lineup, but shortstop Ryan Jackson has been the hottest slugging .773. Jackson is hitting .364 with six of his eight hits going for extra-bases.

 

RECAPPING THE LEHIGH GAME

- Jemile Weeks went 3-for-5 with two runs and a career-high three stolen bases while Terdoslavich finished 2-for-4 with three RBI including his first career home run.

- The Hurricanes pounded out a season-high 14 hits and four pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts. Jason Santana (2-0) earned the win in his first start of the season and just the fourth of his career for the Hurricanes. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out three in 5 1/3 innings of work.

- Yonder Alonso went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and Blake Tekotte finished 2-for-4 with two runs for the Hurricanes.

- Jemile Weeks' three stolen bases marked the first time a Hurricane swiped three bases since Jon Jay accomplished the feat June 12, 2006 against Ole Miss at the Oxford Super Regional.

- Sophomore shortstop Ryan Jackson hit his first career home run in the fourth inning. Of Jackson's eight hits this season, six have gone for extra- bases - four doubles, a triple and a home run. He is slugging .773.

- Freshman designated hitter Joey Terdoslavich also hit his first career homer in the fifth.

- DiNatale extended his hitting streak to six games with a 2-for-5 night at the plate.

 

HURRICANES IN THE POLLS

Miami moved up to No. 6 in the latest USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll and has moved up to No. 8 in both the Baseball America and National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) polls. The Hurricanes are also ranked No. 2 by Rivals.com and No. 16 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Perfect Game Crosschecker has the Hurricanes No. 3 in its poll.

 

ABOUT THE BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES

Boston College (6-4, 0-0 ACC) is in the midst of 10-game road trip in the state Florida and wraps up its stay when they too begin Atlantic Coast Conference play traveling to Miami. The Eagles have played eight games in the last nine days including an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox. Friday's series opener at UM will be the team's ninth in the last 10 days. BC has gone 4-3 during its stay not counting a loss to the Red Sox. The Eagles defeated FIU, 7-3, on Monday before splitting a midweek series with FAU. BC won 10-6 on Wednesday after falling 4-3 on Tuesday. Second baseman Matt Hamlet leads the team hitting .450 in 10 starts. He has 18 hits and 10 RBI. Shortstop Barry Butera has a team-high 19 hits and 13 RBI while batting .413. As a team, BC is hitting .317 and already has 21doubles and 20 home runs in 10 games. The Eagle pitching staff brings a 7.37 ERA into the series. BC's rotation for the weekend is RHP Terry Doyle (1-0, 6.92 ERA), RHP Dan Houston (1-0, 8.71 ERA) and RHP James MacDonald (2-0, 0.69 ERA). Three BC players have ties to South Florida - C Tony Sanchez (Miami, Fla./Miami Killian), RHP Dan Houston (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) and OF Ryan Akel (Davie, Fla./American Heritage School).

ERICKSON NAMED TO ROGER CLEMENS AWARD LIST

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Eric Erickson has been named to the preliminary watch list for the fifth annual Roger Clemens Award given to the nation's top pitcher. Erickson is one of five pitchers from the Atlantic Coast Conference on the list. The finalists for the 2007 Roger Clemens Award will be selected in voting by a national panel that includes: all Division 1 head baseball coaches, a selection of national media who cover collegiate baseball, the 16 winners of the R. E. "Bob" Smith Award, which was presented to the top player in the country in Houston in 1988-2003. In addition, the 13 previous finalists for the Clemens Award are also issued ballots. The 2008 award will be presented this summer.
