OMAHA,Neb. - The University of Miami baseball team took time on
Tuesday afternoon to visit Boys and Girls Town in Boys Town, Nebraska. Boys
and Girls Town, established in 1917, offers help, hope and healing to abused,
abandoned, neglected and otherwise at-risk children.
"I thought the trip (to Boys Town) was a very positive one for
our team," said head coach Jim Morris. "We were able to sign autographs and
speak with the kids on life and the importance of school. It was very
interesting learning about the history of Boys Town."
The Hurricanes met with over 200 children signing autographs, and
handing out baseballs, posters and trading cards. Morris and seniors Charlton
Jimerson and Kevin Brown addressed the children about making positive life
choices and the importance of education.
"I really enjoyed our visit to Boys Town," said Jimerson. "I
have a lot in common with a lot of the kids there and to be able to speak
with them was great. Boys Town is a great place and the kids there know
it. I spoke about my life and some of the obstacles I overcame to get to
where I am today. I told them that they are no different and have the
ability to overcome."
Miami, the 1999 NCAA National Champion, returns to action on
Thursday, June 14 at 3p.m. (ET) against Tennessee. With a win over the
Volunteers the Hurricanes would advance to the Saturday's College World
Series Championship game at 1p.m. (ET) against either Stanford or Cal State
Fullerton.
