Final Stats

MIAMI (AP) -- James Dews and Dwayne Collins scored 14 points each, helping Miami beat cross-town rival Florida International 67-53 on Saturday night.

The Hurricanes started the game on a 12-0 run. Forward Alex Galindo, who led the Golden Panthers with 14 points, ended the drought by hitting a 3-pointer with 15:25 left in the half.

FIU (3-4) got as close as 18-14 before the Hurricanes came alive again, storming to a 38-22 lead at the half. The Canes never led by less than double figures in the second half.

The Hurricanes (8-0) are off to their best start since winning 14 straight to start the 2001-02 season. Miami improved to 11-1 in the series and has won five straight since the Golden Panthers won in 1992.

At halftime, the Golden Panthers retired jersey No. 13 of former FIU guard Raja Bell, now a standout in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns. Bell played for FIU from 1997-99.
