August 26, 1998
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 1998-99 University of Miami men’s basketball
schedule features 12 games against teams that were selected for post-season
play last season including a Dec. 5 contest against defending NCAA Champion
Kentucky at Rupp Arena.
Miami will have a total of six regular season games nationally televised
this season. The Hurricanes will play on CBS twice against Kentucky (Dec.
5) and at Connecticut (Feb. 20). Miami will also play three times on ESPN
and once on ESPN2. Miami’s contest with Kentucky will be the Hurricanes’
first regular season game broadcast nationally by a major network since
Feb. 27, 1988 when the Hurricanes faced DePaul on NBC.
Miami opens its 1998-99 schedule on the road against Florida Atlantic
(Nov. 13) and will face several highly successful programs in its non-conference
schedule including Kentucky, UNC Charlotte and Memphis. Kentucky, the winningest
college basketball program in NCAA history, returns seven letterwinners
from last season’s team that finished 35-4 en route to winning its seventh
national title. UNC Charlotte, which advanced to the second round of the
NCAA Tournament last season, returns 11 lettermen from last year’s squad
that posted a 20-11 record including a 10-1 mark at Halton Arena. Memphis
returns three starters, including its top two scorers, from last season’s
team that went 17-12 and finished first in its division in Conference USA.
Miami opens its home schedule with a Nov. 27 contest against Northern Iowa
in Miami Arena.
Miami opens its BIG EAST schedule on Dec. 8 against Boston College.
In addition to hosting the Eagles, the ‘Canes will host NCAA Tournament
participants St. John’s (Jan. 6) and Connecticut (Jan. 20) as well as National
Invitation Tournament teams Seton Hall (Jan. 27) and Georgetown (Feb. 6).
Miami will host BIG EAST rival Notre Dame on Jan. 9.
The Hurricanes will play a total of 12 games at Miami Arena where they
have posted the fifth best home record in the BIG EAST over the last four
seasons. Miami’s 46-14 (.766) home record since 1994 trails only
Connecticut (.877), Georgetown (.845), Villanova (.821) and Syracuse (.769).
“This is one of the most exciting schedules we’ve had since I came
to Miami,” said head coach Leonard Hamilton. “The competitive level of
The BIG EAST Conference took another tremendous jump last season and will
improve with the excellent talent entering the league this season. Our
non-conference games versus Kentucky, UNC Charlotte and Memphis allow us
the opportunity to challenge some of the best teams from around the country
and help us prepare for our tough league schedule.”
Season tickets for the upcoming Hurricane Basketball season are $199
for sidecourt reserved or $129 for endcourt reserved. Miami is also offering
a five-game BIG EAST mini plan for $75 in which one can choose to attend
any five conference contests.
Tickets can be purchased in person at the Hurricane Ticket Office in
the Hecht Athletic Center at 5821 San Amaro Drive in Coral Gables Monday
through Friday between the hours 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. or Saturday 9 a.m. to
