AT MIAMI: Fourth-year junior who enters fall camp as the returning starter at tight end…emerged last season as one of the Hurricanes’ top offensive threats…has all the physical skills with tremendous size, speed and strength…runs precise routes and has soft hands…excellent blocking skills…great attitude and continually works on his own to improve…continues to gain confidence with experience…tenacious blocker who gives 100 percent effort from whistle to whistle…was awarded the extra effort award by the Miami coaching staff following spring drills.
1998 (SOPHOMORE): First-team All-BIG EAST selection…started in 10 of 11 games…pulled down 13 catches for 179 yards on the season… also has three touchdown receptions…caught TD passes against East Tennessee State, Florida State and Temple…hauled in a season-best four passes for 69 yards at Temple…touchdown grab vs. FSU came on a 4th and 1 at the Seminole 9-yard line to tie the score at seven…reeled in a season-long 29-yard reception in season opener vs. ETSU…did not start at Cincinnati.
1997 (FRESHMAN): Named Sporting News first-team freshman All-American…also garnered second-team All-BIG EAST accolades…started at tight end for the Hurricanes in eight games, including each of the final six contests…ranked second on the team with 19 receptions for 294 yards...led UM with four touchdown catches...recorded 110 yards on five receptions and one touchdown against Temple to become the first Miami tight end since Coleman Bell (8 catches, 114 yards) in 1992 to register over 100 yards receiving...rumbled 42 yards for a touchdown vs. Temple...one of two Hurricanes (Reggie Wayne) to go over 100 yards receiving in a game in 1997...caught a pair of touchdown passes vs. Rutgers…grabbed his first career touchdown on a fake field goal against Pittsburgh to even the score at 14-14 in the third quarter.
1996 (REDSHIRT): Spent season working as a member of the Hurricane scout team.
HIGH SCHOOL: Big Springs...named second-team All-State...Dallas Morning News Top 100 selection...also named to Fab 44 list...earned All-West Texas honors...unanimous All-District choice...caught 21 passes for 580 yards and 10 touchdowns...also had two carries for 25 yards and was 2-for-2 passing for 40 yards and two touchdowns...member of special teams return units, averaging 16 yards per punt and 19 yards per kick return...also played defensive end tallying 18 tackles, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and an interception...developed under the guidance of head coach Dwight Butler.
PERSONAL: Born 1/6/78...sociology major...full name is Daniel Lamont Franks...nicknamed “Bubba”...third family member to play Division I college football as uncles Jarrod and Kenneth played at Baylor and Texas Tech, respectively...chose Miami over Texas Tech, Texas and Texas A&M...son of Janice Banks.
