CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The No. 38 Rice University men’s tennis team swept the No. 37 Miami Hurricanes, 7-0, on Sunday morning as rain forced play indoors to the Galleria Tennis Athletic Club in Houston, Texas.
Miami (3-2, 0-1) started off slow as they lost all three dual matches to the Owls. Omar Aly and Wilfredo Gonzalez kept their match close against Harry Fowler and Christian Saravia but ultimately lost 8-6.
“Rice outplayed us today,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “We got down early and never recovered.”
In singles play, Diego Soto was one of the few bright spots for the Canes as he took his match to three sets against the Owls’ Philipp Seifert. Seifert won in a third set tiebreaker with a match score of 4-6, 6-1 and 10-8.
Gonzalez ended his singles match early as he retired in the second set after he lost the first set 6-2 to Sam Garforth-Bles.
Rincon continued, "We have two weeks before we play our next match at home, and we need to take advantage of this time to work hard and improve our games."
