FT. MYERS, Fla. -

In its closing match of the 2010 Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic, the Hurricanes women’s soccer team (3-2-1, 0-0 ACC) shutout the Kent State Golden Flashes (1-2-1, 0-0 MAC) 2-0, Sunday at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

After a scoreless opening half, the Hurricanes dominated early in the second and took the lead off a corner kick in the 51st minute.

Sophomore Olivia Ching lofted the corner perfectly into the box and the 5-10 Brittney Macdonald scored her first goal of the season as she headed the ball into the right side of the net.

The ‘Canes never relented with their offensive pressure and in the 67th minute, Kate Howarth tied Brittney Steinbruch with her team-leading third goal of the season. Lauren Singer and Jordan Roseboro picked up assists on the play as Singer’s cross found Roseboro, who then passed it to Howarth in the middle of the box. Howarth buried the shot into the left side of the net.

“Kent State is a good, athletic and organized team and I’m proud of our response in the second half,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “We stepped up and won more head balls, which led to us getting momentum to score goals. We out-shot them 12-2 in the second half and we were relentless on defense.”

Prior to the season, the Hurricanes teamed-up with UM alum Kristen Kenney’s MALAIKA FOR LIFE organization in Scoring Goals to Save Lives. The premise of the initiative sees the soccer program donate $10 to the charity for every goal scored throughout the season. The goals from Macdonald and Howarth increased this season’s total to $130.

Last season, Miami scored only 20 goals over 19 games. After only six games this season, UM has tallied 13 from nine different goal scorers - with Steinbruch and Howarth leading the way with three apiece.

The Hurricane defense only allowed five shots on the day and Vikki Alonzo needed to make only two saves for her second shutout of the season and the 19th of her career – extending her school record.

Steinbruch didn't score any goals or even record an assist in the two-game classic, but she was named the MVP after consistently drawing defenders away from her teammates. The Wyckoff, N.J. native led her team with 13 shots over the weekend. Joining Steinbruch on the all-classic team were Kate Howarth, Brittney Macdonald and Alonzo.

“It has been a good experience for us to be on the road, but we are all happy to get home for a while,” said Taliaferro.

Miami will return to the pitch next weekend when it hosts the 2010 Hurricane Cup. West Virginia, North Dakota State and FAU will visit Cobb Stadium. The ‘Canes will open with the Mountaineers on Friday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and then close the action with a 1:30 matchup with North Dakota State on Sunday, Sept. 12.
