COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 11th-ranked University of Miami women's tennis team won its fifth straight match and head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews tied a school record with her 131st career victory as the surging Hurricanes beat Maryland, 6-1, Sunday at the Tennis Complex at College Park.
Yaroshuk-Tews, who had 118 wins in six seasons coming into 2008, won her 12th and 13th matches of the season against Boston College and Maryland over the weekend to tie Ian Duvenhage's program-high mark of 131 set from 1981-88.
Miami (13-4, 6-2 ACC) has now won five straight matches for the first time this season and has earned two road sweeps over the last three weeks, taking down the Eagles and the Terrapins two weeks after winning at Virginia and Virginia Tech, March 22-23.
"This week we set out to embrace working on certain things in specific situations and I feel we did a good job of doing that," Yaroshuk-Tews said. "We focused on attacking in certain positions in competitive situations and we were able to improve in those spots over the last two dual matches."
Sophomore All-American Laura Vallverdu won in the No. 1 position for the sixth straight match against an ACC No. 1 player and 12th time in 13 tries overall with a dominating 6-3, 6-0 victory over Michal Amir. No. 80 Romy Farah, back up in the `Canes second position, also won for the fourth time in her last five matches with an easy, 6-3, 6-1 over Karin Lundmark.
For the second time in as many days, UM's last three singles positions all picked up wins. Bianca Eichkorn downed Lisa Miller, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4, Caren Seenauth edged out Oksana Krutiyenko, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 and Claudia Wasilewski won in the sixth spot after Julia Huschke retired in the second set.
Maggie MacKeever won Maryland's lone point, just getting by No. 53 Michaela Kissell, 6-4, 0-6, 11-9 in the third position.
UM won the doubles point after taking the second and third positions open the match. Eichkorn and Seenauth won 8-5 at No. 2 over Lundmark and MacKeever before Kissell and Jenna Osborne clinched the point with an 8-5 victory over Huschke and Krutiyenko at No. 3.
"Overall, I am really happy with the way we played as a team this weekend," Yaroshuk-Tews said. "It was a long trip in tough conditions and our girls did a good job of staying disciplined and focused in both matches."
Yaroshuk-Tews, who took over the UM women's program in 2001-02, owns a career record of 131-41 (.761) after this weekend's matches. Last season, she became the first head coach in school history to win at least 20 games for four straight seasons.
UM will remain on the road next week when it wraps up its regular season with the team's only trip to the state of North Carolina this season to face NC State Saturday, April 12 and Wake Forest Sunday, April 13. Both matches are slated for 12 p.m.
